I wouldn't even consider buying an 8GB card now, two and a half years later. My 3070 is adequate in every way and *should* last at least another couple of years, but because of the anemic VRAM, I'm already on the fence thinking about jumping to a 6950xt (no more nVIDIA for me).

I don't begrudge them the bus bandwidth or anything else, but the VRAM is a joke. at least not if you plan to run anything higher than 1080P. 8GB wasn't enough when the 3070 was released, and it's not enough now. I've even seen youtube reviewers running Control on 8GB cards experience these problems and blame it on the game (same as me before I figured it out). Turning the texture resolution down to 'not fit for anything better than 720 or maybe 1080p' solves all of the problems. Didn't figure out until a year and a half later that it's due to those games running out of VRAM. My 3070 has had wonkiness with it since the day it was new with glitching textures, textures that fail to load, etc. Yes a few newer games, read shitty console ports, may have some issues at 8GB of ram, but those aren't the norm.Įdit: Damn, seems the person I quoted deleted their post.Īctually, yes. It's a 'budget' card, it's a 'low tier' card, and sure enough it is spec'd as one (also note that DDR6x ram was quite a bit more expensive when this card was designed/released).
